Gitpod no longer exists under that name. This page explains what became of it, what Ona offers today and where ZeroLog differs, including who can sign up at all.

## The short answer

### Ona fits better when

- You already belong to an organization that uses Ona.
- You run background agents on a schedule, on pull request events or from an issue tracker.
- Your policy asks for the platform inside your own VPC on AWS or GCP.
- You work in an enterprise setting with governance and audit needs.

### ZeroLog fits better when

- You are a new user looking for a cloud workspace and cannot sign up with Ona.
- You want a single container with a terminal and an AI chat on a fixed monthly price.
- You want files and chats stored in Switzerland, and accept that prompts to the provided models go abroad.
- You can wait for an invitation, since ZeroLog is also in a closed preview.

## What happened to Gitpod

- **2 September 2025: renamed**

Gitpod announced that it is now Ona and described the product as mission control for autonomous software engineering agents.
- **15 October 2025: end of Gitpod Classic**

Ona announced that the pay-as-you-go plan of Gitpod Classic would sunset on 15 October (the post is dated 2 September 2025). The `.gitpod.yml` format is deprecated in favour of `devcontainer.json` and `automations.yml`. Enterprise customers got their own migration timeline.
- **11 June 2026: joining OpenAI**

Ona announced that it is joining OpenAI, and its site now carries the line "Part of OpenAI". Press reports of that day described it as an acquisition. We have not checked whether the deal has closed.
- **Today: new sign-ups are closed**

Ona's documentation says "New customer signup is closed". Existing customers and new members of existing organizations can keep using it. For a self-service cloud workspace, Ona is therefore not an option for new customers at the moment.

## Side by side

*ZeroLog and Ona (formerly Gitpod) compared by focus, access, location, pricing and agents*

| Aspect | Ona (formerly Gitpod) | ZeroLog |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Name and ownership | Gitpod became Ona in September 2025. Ona announced in June 2026 that it is joining OpenAI. | ZeroLog, operated from Switzerland. |
| Focus | A platform for background AI agents. You can run one interactive session or fleets of agents on a schedule, on pull request events or from an issue tracker. Environments are ephemeral and isolated. | A persistent Linux container for your account, with an AI chat, a terminal and tools. Scheduled runs and jobs are included from Mini. Files stay after the chat ends. |
| Access for new customers | Closed. Existing customers and new members of existing organizations can continue. | Closed preview. Accounts on request through the waiting list. |
| Where it runs | In Ona Cloud, or in your own VPC on AWS or GCP for existing organizations. | On servers operated by ZeroLog in Switzerland. There is no option to run it in your own cloud account. |
| Pricing | The pricing page lists no prices and points to a sales contact. | Published plans. Current prices are on the [pricing page](https://zerolog.ch/pricing). |
| Environment definition | `devcontainer.json` for the environment and `automations.yml` for automated tasks. | One of three base images: Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12 with Node.js, or Alpine with Python. Dev container files are not described in the documentation. |
| AI and agents | Ona's own agents, and Codex, run under one governed setup. | Chat and agents with a model catalogue paid from credit. /goal runs until a separate check says the goal is met: up to 4 hours per run on Mini, 8 on Pro, 12 on Max, unlimited on Ultra. |

## The limits of ZeroLog

- **Closed preview**

Accounts are issued on request. You can join the waiting list at [/warteliste](https://zerolog.ch/warteliste).
- **Limited capacity**

The servers are our own and the number of containers is limited. A plan buys a fixed machine, not a share of unlimited capacity.
- **No customer references**

ZeroLog has no customers to name yet. There are no testimonials and no usage figures on this page.
- **Model inference runs abroad**

Files and chats are stored on our servers in Seon (Aargau), Switzerland. Prompts to the models ZeroLog provides go to Featherless in the USA, and can be processed in further countries. The [privacy policy](https://zerolog.ch/legal) lists the providers.
- **Extension and app are not in the stores yet**

The Chrome extension is still in review at the Web Store, and the Android app comes as an APK outside the Play Store. See [Extension](https://zerolog.ch/extension) and [Mobile](https://zerolog.ch/mobile).
- **No enterprise governance**

ZeroLog has no organization features such as audit trails across a team or deployment into your own VPC. If you need those, ZeroLog is not the right tool today.

## Questions

### Is Gitpod still available?

Not under that name. Gitpod became Ona in September 2025, and Ona announced that Gitpod Classic pay-as-you-go would end on 15 October 2025. Ona's documentation says new customer sign-up is closed.

### What are the alternatives to Gitpod?

For repository-based environments there is GitHub Codespaces; see our [comparison](https://zerolog.ch/zerolog-vs-github-codespaces). For a persistent container with an AI chat there is ZeroLog, which is in a closed preview.

### Does ZeroLog read .gitpod.yml?

The documentation does not describe support for `.gitpod.yml` or for `devcontainer.json`. You choose a base image and set the rest up inside the container.

### Where is my data stored with ZeroLog?

Files and chats are stored on the operator's server in Seon (Aargau), Switzerland. Prompts to the provided models go to Featherless in the USA.
